Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, announced the testing of facial recognition technology to detect fake ads using celebrities’ photos on these platforms. The statement made by Meta addressed the fight against fake ads featuring celebrities on social media. It was mentioned that the optional use of facial recognition technology aimed to identify fake ads with celebrities’ photos on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. The statement also mentioned that the facial recognition technology was tested with the profiles of some celebrities on Facebook and Instagram, emphasizing that the use of this technology is optional. It was explained that those who want to use facial recognition technology need to have an account on Facebook and Instagram and upload a video showing their faces, which would then be compared with those suspected of being fake in ads. The statement highlighted that if the detection using this technology confirms that an ad featuring a celebrity’s photo or video is fake, the ad can be blocked, and users can stop using the technology whenever they wish. In November 2021, Meta announced the closure of the facial recognition system on Facebook due to societal concerns and declared that facial scanning data of over one billion users would be deleted.
