Netanyahu Urged Complete Bombing of Gaza After October 7: Destroy Homes, Bomb Everything

2 Mins Read

According to the Israeli press, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly called for the complete bombing of Gaza in a security cabinet meeting just a few days after October 7. Dissatisfied with the attack on 1,500 targets, Netanyahu reprimanded the former Chief of Staff with the words, “Destroy homes, bomb everything you have.” An analysis published in the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper indicated that Netanyahu confronted the former Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi, who had stated they had attacked 1,500 targets in Gaza within the first 48 hours, by asking, “Why not 5 thousand?” Although the number 1,500 required significant intelligence and strength, it was reported that Netanyahu started yelling angrily and slamming the table. When Halevi responded that they did not have approved 5,000 targets, Netanyahu retorted, “I don’t care about targets. Destroy homes, bomb everything you have.” The analysis also mentioned that Netanyahu faced a major setback in the early days of the conflict, with Israeli officers stating that Netanyahu had lost his judgment. Speculation arose that the reason Netanyahu did not allow a comprehensive state inquiry into the attacks on October 7 was because of this. Although the military practically managed the attacks, Netanyahu took credit for every successful move while avoiding responsibility for any failed tactics. Amid Israel’s occupation of Gaza after October 7, the armed wing of Hamas, the Izzeddin al-Qassam Brigades, launched a comprehensive attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, in response to continuous violations against Palestinians, particularly affecting sacred values like the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Israel reported that 1,200 Israelis were killed and 5,132 were injured in the October 7 attacks. Since then, Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip have resulted in approximately 49,617 Palestinian deaths and 112,950 injuries. Reports suggest that thousands are still under the rubble, with civilian infrastructure, including hospitals and schools where people sought refuge, being targeted and destroyed. The Israeli army announced that 840 soldiers had died since the start of the attacks on October 7, 400 of whom died on the ground during the occupation process. During the 4-day “humanitarian pause” declared on November 24, 2023, which later extended by 3 days, a total of 81 Israelis and 240 Palestinians were released as prisoners. The ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement that came into effect on January 19, 2025, saw over 1,700 Palestinian prisoners released from Israeli prisons, and 33 Israeli prisoners, 25 alive and 8 deceased, handed over in Gaza. However, defying the ceasefire on January 19, the Israeli army reignited intense violence with a new attack on the Gaza Strip on March 18.
