Netanyahu Proposes New Name for Regional War: Resurrection War

3 Mins Read

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called for a change in the name of the attacks that have spread to Gaza for a year now and recently to Lebanon, causing concern about turning into a regional conflict, proposing the name “Resurrection War”. Netanyahu, during a cabinet meeting held on the anniversary of October 7, 2023, requested a change in the name of the attacks spreading to Lebanon and posing the risk of turning into a regional war, replacing the previously used title of “War Swords” employed in the genocide in Gaza. Asserting that this is an “existential war,” Netanyahu stated, “Resurrection War. I would like to officially designate this war with this name.” Netanyahu claimed that by achieving the goals of the war, which he has altered and added to over the past year, they would achieve an “absolute victory.” According to information from behind the scenes reported by Yediot Aharonot, some ministers in the cabinet opposed this renaming, arguing that the name could be reminiscent of the “Great Catastrophe” (Nekbe) referred to by Palestinians due to the massacre they endured, generations of exile and displacement, and the “independence war” of Israel’s establishment in 1948. Despite ceasefire resolutions announced by the United Nations Security Council, which have not been enforced, during Israel’s ongoing attacks in Gaza, Netanyahu, who has been criticized by the Israeli public, media, and international community for rejecting a ceasefire, insisted on the war’s goals and absolute victory. In September, he argued that the occupation of the Gaza-Egypt border Philadelphi Corridor by the Israeli army was necessary to achieve these. Israel added the return of evacuated citizens from the north to their homes to the war’s objectives in September, and began a severe attack on Hezbollah in Lebanon since last month, announcing that it would directly cease fire with a ceasefire in Gaza and after reaching an agreement in Lebanon. REGIONAL VIOLENCE WAVE DOESN’T SUBSIDE Claiming “security,” Israel continues to cause a humanitarian and regional disaster from October 7, 2023, to today, primarily in Gaza, the West Bank, and now in Lebanon. Nearly 42,000 Palestinians, including 17,000 children and 12,000 women, have died due to Israel’s year-long attacks on Gaza. Despite being described as in violation of international laws of war and humanitarian law by experts, images of Palestinians being bombed since October 7, 2023, are being watched by the entire world without being able to prevent it. Despite the loss of life and displacement in the scenario where Israel has taken its attacks to Lebanon, the United States recently announced an increased $8.7 billion military aid package to Israel. Concerns are growing that the regional conflict would become more intense and complex with Israel’s response to Iran’s recent ballistic missile attack.
