The US government has initiated two separate investigations to examine the impact of imported drugs and semiconductors, as well as semiconductor production equipment, on national security. According to a statement by the US Department of Commerce, the investigation concerning imported drugs covers finished drugs, medical countermeasures, active pharmaceutical ingredients, basic starting materials, and derivatives of these products. The investigation on semiconductors aims to determine the effects of importing semiconductors, semiconductor production equipment, and related derivative products on national security. Public opinions are being requested for both investigations, with a focus on sharing information about the impact of importing these products on the US domestic production capacity, workforce competency, and supply chains. A 21-day period is provided for the submission of public opinions on the matter.
