It was reported that after surfers in the South Australia state of Australia fell ill following the white foam and dead fish washing up on the shore, 2 beaches were closed to the public. Officials stated that dozens of dead fish and unusual dirty white foam washed ashore on the beaches in Adelaide, South Australia. Authorities noted that surfers who came into contact with the water experienced eye irritation, throat pain, and coughing. Following the incident, it was announced that 2 beaches in the area were closed to the public. Sam Gaylard, an official from the South Australia Environment Protection Authority, stated that they are considering the possibility that the unusual weather conditions may have caused a microalgae bloom resulting in this “concerning” incident. Gaylard mentioned, “At this time of year, when weather conditions are appropriate, we occasionally see isolated microalgae blooms; however, an event of this magnitude is definitely unusual.” Officials reported that samples were taken from the foam on the shore for examination and that the beaches are planned to reopen “as soon as possible.”
