In Mexico, the winner of the elections held on June 2, Claudia Sheinbaum, was sworn in as the country’s first female president. During her speech, Sheinbaum emphasized her goal of reducing impunity and protecting women in Mexico, which has one of the highest rates of femicide in the world.
A swearing-in ceremony for Mexico’s first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum, took place at the Congress building in Mexico City.
The ceremony was attended by more than 100 foreign representatives, including heads of state and government, diplomats, and Jill Biden, the wife of U.S. President Joe Biden, mostly from Latin American countries.
Sheinbaum, who won 59.76% of the votes in the June 2 elections, took the oath of office in the legislative palace of San Lazaro.
“THE TIME FOR WOMEN HAS COME” The 62-year-old scientist and former Mayor of Mexico City, Sheinbaum, stated in her speech, “The time for change has come, the time for women has come. I am a mother, a grandmother, a scientist, and a faithful woman, and from today onwards, I am the president of Mexico by the will of the people. We, as women, have come to lead the future of our beautiful nation. I did not come alone, we all came together.”
Sheinbaum pledged to support women’s rights and ensure that Latin America’s second-largest economy remains a safe place for international investment.
Sheinbaum also made 100 commitments, ranging from expanding education and public health services to building 1 million new homes, capping the prices of essential goods, and presenting a reform package to combat gender-based violence and discrimination.
“I PROMISE TO CONTINUE MAKING HISTORY”
She reiterated her goal of reducing impunity and protecting women in Mexico, a country with one of the highest rates of femicide in the world.
Sheinbaum stated, “Our guide is the happiness and well-being of the people. I promise to continue making history.”
