Measles Resurfaces in the U.S.: Another Child Dies

2 Mins Read

In the Texas state of the U.S., the second child death caused by measles in the last 10 years has occurred. State officials warn that the outbreak could continue for another year. The measles crisis in Texas is ongoing, with the confirmation of the second child death caused by measles in the past ten years in the U.S. It is feared that if the outbreak continues at its current rate, the country may lose the “measles-eliminated country” status obtained in 2000. According to The New York Times, measles has resulted in the death of another child in West Texas. It is reported that dozens of people are infected in states bordering Texas as well. Records obtained by the newspaper show that an 8-year-old girl died at a hospital in Lubbock due to “measles lung failure” on Thursday morning. The first death from measles occurred in February in West Texas, where an unvaccinated child lost their life due to measles. In New Mexico, a person died after testing positive for measles, but officials did not confirm that measles was the cause of death. Regarding the latest death, an official from President Donald Trump’s administration stated that the child’s death is still being investigated. Since the measles outbreak began in January, 480 cases have been recorded in West Texas, with 56 of these individuals being treated in the hospital. Measles has spread to neighboring states as well, with 54 cases in New Mexico and 10 cases in Oklahoma. Health officials in West Texas predict that the outbreak in the state will continue for another year. The U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., known for his anti-vaccine views, faces criticism due to the handling of the outbreak during this period. Kennedy is criticized for silently supporting vaccination and emphasizing untested treatment methods. According to Texas physicians, the minister’s support for alternative treatments delays critical care access for patients and leads them to receive toxic levels of vitamin A. Furthermore, experts also express concern that the Trump administration’s recent elimination of international public health guarantees and withdrawal of financial support for local health centers increases the likelihood of a widespread outbreak affecting multiple states.
