1 Mins Read

The US Department of State could not find any evidence linking Tufts University student Rümeysa Öztürk to antisemitism or terrorism. Recently, there has been a new development regarding Rümeysa Öztürk, who was detained in the US on charges of supporting Palestine. According to an exclusive report by The Washington Post, Öztürk was detained by immigration police days before a state department memorandum was prepared about her. The memorandum stated that there was no evidence showing that Öztürk had participated in antisemitic activities or made statements supporting any terrorist organization.

LACK OF EVIDENCE: The memorandum from the Department of State cast doubt on the allegations put forth by the Trump administration in order to deport Öztürk. The report emphasized that there was insufficient evidence to cancel Öztürk’s visa.

WHAT HAD HAPPENED? Rümeysa Öztürk, a 30-year-old Turkish citizen, is pursuing her doctoral studies at Tufts University. Öztürk faced criticism after writing an article for the student newspaper criticizing the university’s stance on the Gaza War. Öztürk is expected to appear in federal court in Vermont today.
