After the killing of Hamas Leader Yahya Sinwar in Gaza through an Israeli operation, statements regarding the developments in the region came from several countries. The first statement was issued by the White House administration. President Joe Biden said a new process for a ceasefire and hostage exchange might begin in Gaza. He used the expression “I hope Netanyahu will end the war soon.” He also mentioned that he will send U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to establish contacts in Israel. The U.S. Department of State, on the other hand, indicated that they see a new opportunity in the coming days for the end of the war. The statement included “We will do our best, along with our partners, to end the situation in Gaza.” Regarding the selection of a new leader for Hamas, it was stated that “We hope that they will act differently on the issue of a ceasefire from Sinwar.” The Pentagon announced that no U.S. troops were involved in Israel’s operation. MACRON: AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE END OF THE WAR French President Emmanuel Macron did not delay his statement following Sinwar’s death. He used the expression, “Sinwar’s death is an opportunity for the release of hostages and the end of the war.” He noted that Sinwar’s loss was a severe blow to Hamas. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also said, “Sinwar’s death will initiate a new process in the region.” EUROPEAN UNION STATEMENT High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, claimed that Sinwar was an obstacle to ceasefire negotiations in Gaza. European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen stated, “Sinwar’s death will weaken Hamas, and a two-state solution in Gaza is only possible with a strong and reshaped Palestinian authority.”
