Six years after its opening, Istanbul Airport has welcomed over 317.7 million passengers to date. Istanbul Airport, with 322 destinations, has earned the title of being the busiest international airport in Europe in 2022 and 2023.

Among the greatest projects of the Republic era, Istanbul Airport opened its doors six years ago. Covering a total area of 76.5 million square meters, Istanbul Airport was constructed with many world-first features. The inauguration of the first phase of Istanbul Airport took place on October 29, 2018, with the participation of over 50 high-level guests from around the world, including President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and former Speaker of the Turkish Parliament Binali Yıldırım. Leaders from countries like Albania, Serbia, Qatar, TRNC, Kyrgyzstan, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova, Pakistan, Sudan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Bulgaria attended the opening event at that date. The new airport that will transform Istanbul into a global aviation Hub in passenger and cargo transportation stands out in the global aviation sector with its large terminals, customs areas, independent runways, apron, parking lots, food and beverage, and social facilities. The airport also features a total of 53,700 square meters of duty-free shopping area with 181 stores, as well as 114 restaurants and cafes.

With over 2.1 million flight traffic, 101 different airlines operate flights to the airport with a parking area covering 1 million square meters. Over 317 million passengers were transported in the 2,144,261 flights conducted so far, with approximately 1.4 million tons of cargo transfer. Istanbul Airport offers flights to more than 120 countries, with a total of 322 destinations, 45 domestic and 277 international. Earning the title of the busiest international airport in Europe in 2022 and 2023, Istanbul Airport has surpassed major European capitals like Amsterdam, Paris, and London in the majority of this year according to data from the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation (EUROCONTROL).
