An investigation has been initiated into the claim that a UAV believed to be of Russian origin flew five times over the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission located in Ispra, Italy. The incident is being investigated for potential political and military espionage connections. Reports in Corriere della Sera newspaper stated that the Milan Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into the UAV, believed to be of Russian origin, which is alleged to have flown five times over the EU’s joint research center located in Ispra on the shores of Lake Maggiore in the Lombardy region over the past month, following accusations of political and military espionage and terrorism. It is reported that the issue came to light through a report sent from the center to the Italian Carabinieri, revealing the status of the center’s UAV defense systems. Preliminary investigations also revealed that the flights were remotely controlled from a distance not far from the restricted airspace of the research facility. The matter is expected to be discussed tomorrow in the Parliamentary Security Committee (COPASIR). Benedetto Della Vedova from the opposition party “More Europe Party” commented on the issue by mentioning a boat accident in Lake Maggiore in 2023 involving Italian and Israeli intelligence officers and the escape of Russian businessman Artem Uss from house arrest in the same year in the same area. Della Vedova noted, “We should be concerned about the increasing number of incidents related to the activities of foreign secret services in Lombardy. The government must clarify this matter.” The Joint Research Centre in Ispra is identified as the European Commission’s third-largest research campus after those in Brussels and Luxembourg, where research has been conducted for 65 years in the fields of nuclear, security, space, sustainable resources, and transportation.
