A 28-year-old Melissa Wilband, living in England, was found guilty of fatally shaking her four-month-old daughter Lexi Wilband in 2020.
Living in England, Melissa Wilband was convicted of killing her baby.
According to BBC, Wilband caused severe brain hemorrhage by shaking her four-month-old baby Lexi Wilband violently at her home in Newent, Gloucestershire in April 2020.
Wilband’s former partner, Jack Wheeler, was acquitted of causing the child’s death. The jury reached a verdict after a two-day deliberation.
CAUSES OF BRAIN HEMORRHAGE AND DEATH
Prosecutors stated that the bleeding in Lexi’s brain was due to violent shaking.
According to prosecutors, these violent shakes could have occurred multiple times. After fainting six days later, Lexi passed away on April 18, 2020, at Bristol Children’s Hospital.
“INFANT CRY” SEARCHES
Wilband did not take her baby to the doctor when four-month-old Lexi fainted. Prosecutors alleged that Wilband may have intentionally missed appointments to prevent the detection of health problems caused by Lexi’s shaking.
Additionally, it emerged in court that Wilband had conducted searches online about “infant crying.”
FAKE DNA TEST
During her pregnancy, Wilband arranged a fake DNA test to convince her former partner, Jack Wheeler, that he was Lexi’s biological father. She presented Wheeler with a fake document claiming to be a paternity test confirming himself as the father.
However, the real DNA test of Lexi, born on November 30, 2019, revealed that Wheeler was not her biological father. It was proven in court with evidence that Wilband had arranged this fake document to keep Wheeler in the dark.
