Indian poet and writer Jacinta Kerketta refused the “Young Writer” award given by “Room to Read India” in order to draw attention to the tragedies faced by children in Palestine. Criticizing the support of the institution collaborating with the US International Development Agency, Kerketta delivered a message of solidarity. Indian poet Kerketta rejected the award given in collaboration with the US to show support for Palestine. Jacinta Kerketta, an Indian writer and poet, declined the award given to her by an educational institution that collaborates with the US International Development Agency (USAID) in support of Palestine. In her statement, Kerketta mentioned that the institution “Room to Read India” considered her deserving of the “Young Writer” award for her children’s poetry collection called “Jirhul.” Expressing that thousands of children are being killed in Palestine and stating that “adults cannot provide a better world for children,” Kerketta said she rejected the award due to the collaboration with the US International Development Agency. Kerketta stated, “As a poet, I want to show my solidarity with Palestinian children, women, and victims.” Additionally, Kerketta, as reported in The Independent newspaper, said, “How can arms trade and childcare coexist when these weapons destroy children? Due to these concerns, I refused this USAID-backed award.”
