Increase in Sales During Ramadan: Popular Spots for Local People and Tourists

2 Mins Read

In the tassel market near the historic castle in the city of Erbil, Iraq, there has been an increase in sales with the arrival of Ramadan. Different colored, patterned, and sized tassels are displayed on stalls or around the necks and hands of sellers in the tassel market in the city center. The tassels in the market, which are popular spots for local people and tourists, are purchased not only for prayer but also as souvenirs or gifts. Depending on the quality and type of tassels, prices range from 1000 dinars (27 TL) to 300,000 dinars (8,000 TL). It is emphasized that interest in tassels, which are among the symbols of the city, increases even more during Ramadan. Hemed Emin Kadir, who sells tassels in the market, stated that there is a high demand for 101-beaded tassels in Ramadan because people in the region engage in prayer during this month. Kadir mentioned that plastic tassels are popular because of their lower prices, selling for 1000 dinars. Pointing out that the prices of mastic variety tassels reach up to 300,000 dinars, Kadir highlighted that these are for special customers. Emphasizing the impact of the economic situation on the market, Kadir noted that when salaries are paid, the market becomes lively. Another tassel seller, Ismail Muhammed, said, “There is always a demand for tassels, but they are purchased more during Ramadan. Because Muslims recite prayers or give gifts with 101 beads.” Muhammed expressed that tassel prices vary from 1000 dinars to 300 dinars depending on the type. Mentioning that the market experiences a slowdown when salaries are not paid, Muhammed said, “We used to sell a lot in previous years (during Ramadan). Now, it’s a bit slower.”
