The anticipated cold weather lasted longer and was more severe than expected, resulting in significant negative effects on agricultural frost. Potatoes were left in the fields, while fruits, vegetables, and cereals suffered major losses. It is anticipated that the prices of products affected by agricultural frost will rise. Concerns about crop yield are rising in the fruit and vegetable sector. Agricultural frost occurred in Cukurova between February 22nd and February 25th. The four-day frost adversely affected agricultural production in the region, with most early potatoes in the fields being damaged. Other varieties of potatoes also experienced decreased yields, with the harvest being delayed by one month. Mehmet Akın Doğan, the President of the Yüreğir Chamber of Agriculture, stated, “We knew in advance that there would be frost, but according to the data we received from the Meteorology Department, we were expecting temperatures between -1 and -3, but it reached -5 and -8. Some of our farmers burned rubber, straw, and chaff, but due to the very low temperatures, we could not protect our products.” Citrus trees dried up, lemons suffered significant damage, and the production of grapefruits, tangerines, and oranges decreased. The situation is not looking good for citrus fruits and cereal crops. Farmers are expressing their grievances and requesting loan deferrals. Doğan remarked, “We lost all of the early peaches, and since the late peaches did not blossom, the damage rate there is lower. We lost early fruits and vegetables, but our wheat suffered greatly, and farmers who irrigated their wheat are expecting very low yields.” It is expected that the prices of products affected by agricultural frost will increase in the market in the coming weeks.
