Hybrid Car Sales Surpass Petrol Models in Europe

In the European Union (EU) new car market, the sales of hybrid vehicles reached a share of 32.8% in September, surpassing petrol models for the first time. The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) disclosed the new car registration data for EU countries in September. According to the data, new car sales in EU countries dropped by 6.1% last month compared to the same month in 2023, hitting 809,163 units. It was determined that 32.8% of new cars sold in member countries were hybrid, while 29.8% were petrol, 17.3% were electric, 10.4% were diesel, 6.8% were Plug-In hybrids, and 2.9% were vehicles that used other types of fuel. Therefore, the share of hybrids in new car sales in September surpassed petrol models for the first time. Furthermore, the combined share of purely electric, hybrid, and Plug-In hybrid models in total sales reached 56.9%. Electric car sales increased by 9.8% in September compared to the same period last year, reaching 139,702. However, electric car sales during January-September of this year decreased by 5.8% compared to the same period last year, dropping to 1,047,869 units. New car sales in September saw a 7% decrease in Germany, 11.1% in France, and 10.7% in Italy compared to the same period last year. On the other hand, the total sales during January-September increased by 0.6% compared to the same period last year, reaching 7,989,776. According to manufacturers, in September, the Volkswagen Group made the most new car sales in the EU with 216,577 vehicles sold. The Stellantis Group followed Volkswagen, with brands like Peugeot, Fiat, Citroen, and Opel, selling 120,582 cars. The Renault Group ranked third with 88,149 new cars sold.
