We all experience some level of stress in our lives. Whether it’s work, family, financial, emotional, or even health-related, stress is a common factor. While most of us are aware of the harmful effects of stress on our bodies, many do not know what it can lead to. Science states that some amount of stress is inevitable, but continuous stress can actually cause damage to your body. Here’s what happens to your body when you’re under too much stress…Even though seemingly harmless, stress-related headaches can last for hours or days and even if not causing long-term effects, can disrupt your life completely. In addition to headaches, you may also experience dizziness, confusion, and a feeling of fainting. Psychologically, headaches can lead to anxiety and impact your mood as well. Are you feeling dull aches all over your body without any visible cause? You are likely experiencing excessive stress recently. When under stress, your body goes into fight or flight response, causing your muscles to tense up in preparation for action; you either fight or run. When this is constant, your muscles start to constantly ache. This can also lead to restlessness and outbursts of anger.Stress, which can easily be mistaken for heart disease (an already existing condition that needs to be controlled), can manifest as a transient sharp chest pain. Most people describe this as a sudden severe pain in the chest that can hit you when you are very stressed or in the middle of a panic attack. Fortunately, the pain should subside spontaneously without the need for further treatment.Constant stress can weaken your immune system because all your organs start working extra to keep you calm and peaceful. This disrupts the balance of your body, leading to a weakened immune system. Constant stress can make you sick frequently, leading to colds and coughs, hair loss, weight fluctuations, digestion problems, skin allergies, and similar issues.Perhaps the most concerning aspect is that it affects everything else. Chronic stress can lead to low-quality sleep (waking up intermittently), oversleeping, or insomnia. It can also make you prone to nightmares and night sweats. This affects your concentration, focus, productivity, and can also lead to weight gain.WHAT TO DO?As mentioned before, a little stress is nothing to be worried about. However, if you are constantly stressed, you should take concrete measures to control this stress starting with exercises, meditation, yoga, therapy, and similar practices. Additionally, practicing mindfulness can greatly help you in the long run.
