How to Apply for Debt Restructuring? When will Credit Card Debt Restructuring Begin?

The Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT) and the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BRSA) have taken coordinated steps regarding individual credit cards. According to this, debts can be restructured for up to 60 months. So, how can one apply for debt restructuring? When will credit card debt restructuring begin? The Amendment of the Communique on the Maximum Interest Rates to be Applied in Credit Card Transactions by the CBRT and the BRSA’s decision related to the issue were published in the Official Gazette and on the internet site respectively. Accordingly, the BRSA has introduced the possibility of restructuring individual credit card and personal loan debts for up to 60 months for those who cannot pay. Following the decision, the details of the credit card debt restructuring process are being awaited. Individual credit card debts can be restructured for up to 60 months. Those unable to pay the minimum amount of the period’s debt can extend their existing credit card debt balances for up to 60 months. The monthly installment amount will be added to the minimum payment amount for that month. While the maximum contractual interest rates applied to individual credit cards will vary according to the credit card’s period debt based on the reference rate, the determined rates will be announced on October 24th and will come into effect on November 1st. Changes have been made to the minimum payment amounts on credit cards. The limit amount for the minimum payment rate of 20% of the period debt has been raised from 25 thousand lira to 50 thousand lira. For credit cards with balances of 50 thousand lira and below, the minimum payment rate is set at 20% of the period debt. For period debts of 50 thousand lira and above, the minimum payment amount will be applied as 40%.
