Greenland’s New Prime Minister Issues Sharp Response to Trump: “We Belong to No One!”

2 Mins Read

Greenland’s new Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, strongly reacted to US President Donald Trump’s statements about wanting to take control of the island. The Prime Minister said, “We belong to no one. We determine our own future.”

The new leader of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, responded to US President Donald Trump’s remarks about incorporating Greenland into the US. “President Trump says the US will take Greenland. Let me make it clear: the US will not be able to do that. We belong to no one. We determine our own future,” he said.

TRUMP’S CLAIMS AND REACTIONS
In an interview with NBC, Trump said, “We will take Greenland. Yes, 100 percent,” suggesting that the US could make such a move without resorting to military force. The US President argued that despite Greenland’s autonomous status, it is still tethered to Denmark and insisted that the region is of strategic importance to the US. Trump had previously stated that there were “real discussions” about incorporating Greenland into the US.

NIELSEN: “WE SHOULD UNITE UNDER PRESSURE”
Jens-Frederik Nielsen, a 33-year-old, was sworn in as Greenland’s youngest Prime Minister on Friday. In his first press conference after taking office, Nielsen urged for political unity in a time when “we are under pressure” in his hometown of Nuuk.

CRITICISM FROM US TO GREENLAND
A delegation led by US Vice President JD Vance visited Greenland. Vance criticized Denmark, saying, “Our message to Denmark is very simple: you have not done a good job for the people of Greenland. You have not invested enough in the security architecture of the people of Greenland and this incredible, beautiful piece of land.” In response to the US’s harsh criticism, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stated, “We are open to criticism, but let me be completely honest, we do not like the tone of the criticism. You should not speak like this to close allies, and I still regard Denmark and the US as close allies.”

As tensions between the US and Greenland escalate with Trump’s remarks, debates about Greenland’s independence and future continue to intensify.
