Greek newspaper Kathimerini discussed Turkey’s role in European security. The newspaper advised the government to acknowledge Turkey’s increasing importance in Europe’s security and strive for alignment. An article mentioned that Turkey could fill the void left by the US in Europe, urging Greece to support Turkey’s rapprochement with Europe.
Kathimerini published an article by Law Professor Yorgos Monastiriakos from the University of Ottawa. Titled “Greece should adapt to Turkey’s growing importance in European security,” the article addressed Europe’s new security conditions and Turkey’s increasing role in this regard.
“POWER BALANCE WILL SHIFT IN EUROPE” The article reminded readers of the Crimean War, where England and France aligned with the Ottoman Empire against Russia and Greece, highlighting a similar shift in power balance expected in Europe now. It stressed the need for Greece not to be excluded from Europe due to Turkey, noting that in the current environment and America’s identity crisis, Europe and Greece must forge closer ties with Ukraine and Turkey.
IMPORTANT TO STRENGTHEN DEFENSE INDUSTRY The article pointed out Ankara’s significant experience in dealing with Russia, stating, “No world leader has played against Russian war criminal Vladimir Putin as well as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, from Syria to Azerbaijan and even to Libya. Turkey’s strongman is unbeaten against the Russian dictator, as far as I can count.” Emphasizing Turkey’s pivotal role in strengthening Europe’s defense industry, it highlighted its low production costs and substantial workforce in the defense sector.
“TURKEY CAN FILL THE VOID LEFT BY THE US” The article mentioned that Turkey could fill the void left by the US in Europe, stating, “Athens may not be able to prevent this, but it should try to influence the nature and depth of Turkey’s rapprochement with Europe.” It recommended Greece to reconsider its relations with Russia in light of new geopolitical conditions, strive to establish independent relations with the US outside Europe, and support Turkey’s alignment with Europe.
