Google introduced its chip called Taara, which enables data transmission through light beams. Taara provides internet connection at very high speeds without the need for any cables. X, a unit within Google’s parent company Alphabet, is offering the potential to revolutionize internet access with its newly developed technology. The Taara chip, produced using silicon photonics technology, utilizes light beams for data transmission. This technology offers an alternative to costly fiber optic cables while also standing out in terms of speed and energy efficiency. Unlike previous systems that used large mechanical components, the new Taara chip is only the size of a fingernail and operates with a completely software-based architecture. This reduces costs while increasing efficiency.

HOW DOES TAARA WORK? The innovative chip developed by Google directs laser beams precisely to carry out data transmission. These beams can carry data between two points without the need for a physical cable. Taara uses optical phased array technology instead of mechanical movements to control light beams through electronic signals. With software support, the chip minimizes signal loss and enables high-speed data transfer.

WHAT INTERNET SPEED DOES TAARA PROVIDE? Taara can transfer data at a very high speed of 20 gigabits per second and operates smoothly up to a distance of 20 kilometers. This makes it a significant alternative for providing internet access in areas where installing fiber optic infrastructure is challenging, such as rural and underdeveloped regions. According to Speedtest’s 2025 data, the average internet speed in fixed connections in Turkey is 49 megabits. This means that the Taara chip, which does not use fiber optic cables, can provide internet connection speeds 408 times faster than our country’s average.

WHEN WILL GOOGLE TAARA BE AVAILABLE FOR USE? The team working on Taara aims to develop a new version using thousands of light emitters to increase the chip’s capacity and range. The company is also working on enabling light beams to be transmitted in all weather conditions. It is expected that Taara will be available in 2026. According to industry experts, widespread use of this technology for individual users may take a bit longer, especially due to cost factors. However, the acceleration of adaptation to new technologies, infrastructure improvements, and cost reductions resulting from new research could speed up the process. The Taara technology could be a global breakthrough in expanding internet access and overcoming infrastructure limitations. The opportunities provided by this new chip are seen as an important step in ensuring that no one is left without internet access.
