Google Racism Lawsuit: Company to Pay $28 Million

2 Mins Read

Google has agreed to pay $28 million as part of a lawsuit filed against the company for racism allegations. The case claimed that Google paid better salaries and provided career opportunities to white and Asian employees compared to employees from other ethnic backgrounds. According to BBC, the lawsuit was filed in 2021 by former Google employee Ana Cantu, who alleged that the company favored white and Asian employees, paid lower wages to employees from other backgrounds, and did not offer career advancement opportunities. Cantu, of Mexican descent, stated that she had worked hard at Google for 7 years but did not receive promotions while her white and Asian peers did. Google agreed to pay $28 million as part of the lawsuit filed on behalf of 6,632 employees employed between February 15, 2018, and December 31, 2024. Judge Charles Adams of the California Santa Clara Superior Court granted preliminary approval to the settlement reached between the parties. A Google spokesperson announced that while they reached a settlement, they continue to deny the allegations of discrimination towards their employees. The spokesperson stated, “We have reached a settlement, but we continue to deny the claims of treating anyone differently and will remain committed to fair payment, hiring, and compensation decisions for all employees.”
