In recent years, Google has removed many Russian channels, including state channels, from YouTube, leading to Moscow demanding a massive fine. Even Moscow struggles to pronounce the $20 billion fine that Google has been requested to pay. Russia imposed administrative fines on Google for removing certain channels on YouTube. Legal expert Ivan Morozov, speaking to the Russian news agency TASS, stated that if the fines are not paid within nine months, the amount will double every day. Morozov highlighted that the court cannot cancel this fine, and Google must pay double every day for not complying with the court decision. An unnamed lawyer involved in the legal process against Google, speaking to the Russian RBK newspaper, stated that the compensation amount that Google needs to pay for 17 Russian TV channels exceeds $20 billion as ordered by the court. Google has recently removed many Russian channels belonging to various institutions and individuals from YouTube. The U.S.-based company initiated bankruptcy proceedings in 2022 for its Russian subsidiary due to its failure to fulfill its financial obligations in Russia. Experts suggest that due to Google’s outstanding fines in Russia reaching an unpayable level, access to the company’s services may be restricted in Russia. MOSCOW STATEMENT Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated to journalists in Moscow that Google should not restrict the activities of Russian television channels. Peskov emphasized that while Google is doing so, the $20 billion fine should serve as a reason for Google management to pay attention and rectify the situation. Struggling to pronounce the $20 billion figure, Peskov mentioned that despite being a specially formulated amount, it is filled with symbolic elements.
