The West African country of Ghana announced that it suffered an income loss of approximately 1.2 billion dollars (around 46 billion TRY) in 2022 due to gold smuggling. Ghana’s Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson revealed that the country experienced a loss of about 1.2 billion dollars in revenue in 2022 due to gold smuggling. Minister Forson met with officials from the UK-Ghana Gold Program at the Ministry of Finance in the capital city of Accra. Following the meeting, Forson posted on social media stating that the country incurred a loss of around 1.2 billion dollars in revenue in 2022 due to gold smuggling. Minister Forson remarked on the peak of the economic crisis in 2022, mentioning that approximately 60 tons of gold were illegally taken out of Ghana, depriving the country of significant foreign exchange and government revenue. He emphasized the damage caused by gold smuggling to the country’s economy and announced new measures to prevent gold smuggling and ensure Ghana fully benefits from its gold resources. Forson mentioned the establishment of a new regulatory body called the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) in this regard. Ghana, historically known as the “Gold Coast,” is among the top gold-producing countries in Africa.
