2 Mins Read

The additional customs duties imposed by US President Donald Trump on many countries remain on the agenda. The latest reaction came from Germany. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that the EU is ready to respond to Washington “as one body”. President Donald Trump’s additional customs tariffs continue to make waves globally. Chancellor Olaf Scholz opened the official inauguration of the Hannover Industrial Fair. Scholz noted that his country stands in solidarity with Canada against Trump, who imposed additional customs duties on the country and suggested that Canada should be the 51st state of the US. Highlighting that the European Union (EU) is not weak against President Donald Trump’s additional customs tariffs and is ready to respond to Washington as one body, Scholz stated, “Canada does not belong to anyone else. Canada is a proud, independent nation. Canada has friends everywhere in the world, especially in Germany and Europe. We stand by your side.” Scholz conveyed that the EU has tools to counter Trump’s customs policy by saying, “Therefore, I say to the US- cooperation remains the goal of Europe. But if the US does not leave any other option, like the tariffs on steel and aluminum, the EU will respond as one body.”
