A powerful explosion occurred at 08:10 local time in the Putra Heights area of Selangor state in Malaysia.
Following the explosion in the natural gas pipeline passing near residential areas, a fire broke out and lasted for hours, spreading to nearby houses and vehicles.
Firefighters who arrived at the scene began evacuating the residents while it was reported that 112 people were injured and 49 homes were damaged according to initial assessments. Officials in the Selangor state announced that the Putra Heights Mosque was declared an emergency center.
Videos shared on social media showing the moment of the explosion revealed fireballs in the sky.
In a written statement by the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department, it was reported that gas flow to the pipeline was cut off after the explosion, but the fire continued for some time due to the accumulated gas inside.
The explosion was determined to have occurred in a natural gas pipeline owned by Malaysia’s national oil company, Petronas. An investigation into the cause of the explosion has been launched, while damage assessment continues in the area.
