Frost Hits Apple Orchards

1 Mins Read

Adverse frost conditions have saddened apple growers in Niğde. Apple orchards have suffered damage due to frost. Atilla Kaplan, President of the Niğde Apple Growers’ Association, mentioned that Niğde is one of the leading apple-producing regions in Turkey. He recalled experiencing a significant loss in production last year due to high temperatures and drought, stating, “Niğde ranks 2nd in apple production in Turkey.” They have implemented frost protection methods, including operating continuous irrigation systems in the orchards. Kaplan emphasized the need to provide at least 3 tons of water per hectare, explaining that 1 gram of water releases 80 calories when freezing, covering the plants with ice. Despite taking these precautions, the region experienced temperatures as low as -15.6 degrees Celsius, surpassing the protection capacity of the methods. Kaplan highlighted the extreme coldness experienced across the country, especially in Niğde. With expectations of a lower yield compared to the previous year, they are hopeful for government support to mitigate the impact of the dire circumstances.
