The popular Netflix series Emily in Paris has caused a diplomatic crisis between two countries. Moving the show’s main character Emily to Rome in the latest season has created tension between France and Italy. While French President Macron stated he will fight for Emily to return to Paris, Rome Mayor Gualtieri questioned, “Doesn’t Macron have more urgent concerns?” The possibility of the next season taking place in Rome after Emily’s move sparked a reaction in France.
President Macron emphasized that they will “struggle hard” for Emily to return to Paris in an interview with Variety magazine. On the other hand, Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri responded by saying, “Emily is doing very well in Rome.” Since 2020, the series has revolved around Chicagoan Emily Cooper’s adventures in a luxury marketing agency in Paris. After the fourth season was released in August and September, discussions started regarding the fifth season being set in Rome.
Macron made it clear in his interview that he would not allow the show to be moved to Italy. “We will fight hard, and we will ask them to stay in Paris!” Macron stated, adding that it wouldn’t make sense for Emily in Paris to be set in Rome. Gualtieri replied to Macron on social media, saying, “Dear Emmanuel Macron, don’t worry: Emily is doing great in Rome. You can’t control the heart; let her choose herself,” highlighting other international issues that should concern Macron more.
Gualtieri called attention to more pressing matters that Macron should worry about, such as wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as the severe hurricane linked to climate change. He emphasized that these are likely more critical European issues for Macron than Emily. The series faced criticism initially in France for presenting an unrealistic Paris and reinforcing clichéd French images. Yet, activities like “Emily tours” rapidly gained popularity and contributed positively to France’s image and economy.
A study conducted by the National Cinema and Animation Center (CNC) of France revealed that approximately 38% of tourists cite this series as a reason for visiting Paris. The participation of Macron’s wife Brigitte in the series also indicated the impact of Emily in Paris. Macron expressed pride in Brigitte’s role in the fourth season, stating, “I was very proud, and she was very happy. This is also good for France’s image.” When asked if he had a request to appear in the series, Macron replied, “I am less attractive than Brigitte!”
