Foreign Minister Fidan: We cannot wait for Israel’s goodwill for a two-state solution

Speaking at the meeting organized by the Gaza Contact Group of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Arab League, on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized that “we cannot wait for Israel’s goodwill to implement a two-state solution.” Fidan also highlighted the ongoing impossibility to end the “killing frenzy” in Gaza by Israel, pointing out that ceasefire talks have reached a deadlock. He drew attention to the fact that ceasefire initiatives are consistently thwarted by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stating, “Israel extended its aggressiveness first to the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and now to Lebanon.”

Stating that our region is engulfed in flames due to Netanyahu, Fidan warned that a critical threshold has been reached. Emphasizing the disruption of the “rules-based order” that is highly valued by the international community, Fidan noted that Israel’s aggression to the point of genocide has raised awareness of the true nature of the problem. He underscored the importance of not turning a blind eye to Israel’s “greed” and pointed out that the rejection by the Israeli Parliament of the Palestinian State and the two-state solution is crystal clear. Fidan highlighted that the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice and the UN General Assembly resolution dated May 10, 2024, have opened a new door, stating, “The State of Palestine must be a full member of the UN. Now we are one veto away from our goal.”

Fidan emphasized that the occupation of Palestine has never brought peace or more security to Israel, stating that the implementation of a two-state solution will ensure lasting security for everyone. He recalled Turkey’s proposal to establish a mechanism to meet the security needs of both countries, stating, “The two-state solution must be implemented without further delay.”
