During the Fidan-Rubio meeting, preparations for an upcoming visit expected to occur between state leaders from Ankara and Washington will be discussed. CAATSA SANCTIONS will be one of the top priorities in the meeting, alongside the F-35 fighter jet project. Due to Turkey’s S-400 air defense system, the country was removed from the F-35 project partnership and the delivery of six F-35 aircraft within the 40-aircraft order for Turkey has not been made. It is indicated that Minister Fidan will emphasize the importance of starting efforts to lift CAATSA sanctions and reevaluating Turkey’s return process to the F-35 program.
The recent situation in Syria will also be addressed during the meeting. Fidan will underline the need to strengthen cooperation in countering terrorist organizations, particularly focusing on the elimination of PKK/YPG elements under the SDG umbrella.
Furthermore, Fidan will address Turkey’s steps to combat the terrorist organization ISIS and the safe management of camps where terrorists are detained. The importance of coordinated efforts will be emphasized.
The meeting will also discuss lifting sanctions on Syria, humanitarian aids, and reconstruction options for cooperation between Turkey and the US. Additionally, it is expected that Minister Fidan will bring up Israel’s renewed attacks and humanitarian crisis in Gaza, calling for the US to utilize its influence on Israel to both restore ceasefire and continue humanitarian aid.
Moreover, efforts led by the US to end the Russia-Ukraine War will be supported, with Turkey expressing its readiness to contribute to the cause during the meeting.
