Flooding in Central and West Africa: 10 million children unable to attend school

1 Mins Read

International humanitarian organization Save The Children reported that approximately 10 million children in Central and West Africa are unable to attend school due to floods caused by heavy rainfall. In a written statement from the organization, it was mentioned that due to floods in Niger, Nigeria, Mali, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), about 1 million people have been forced to leave their homes. The statement also indicated that the rainfall has caused severe damage to school buildings, with some even collapsing, leading many of those displaced to seek shelter in schools. The statement highlighted that Mali and Niger have been the most affected by the floods, with schools in Mali expected to open 1 month late and those in Niger 3 weeks late. Furthermore, the statement revealed that conflicts and poverty have already prevented 36 million children from continuing their education in the 4 countries, with an additional 10 million children unable to do so due to the floods.
