In the South Asian country of Nepal, the capital Kathmandu and surrounding cities have witnessed the deaths of 151 people due to severe flooding and landslides caused by heavy rains. According to The Kathmandu Post newspaper, security forces stated that search and rescue operations are ongoing as a result of the extreme rainfall affecting Katmandu and its vicinity for the past 3 days.
The statement revealed that 151 individuals lost their lives due to the floods and landslides, with 56 people reported missing. Officials from the search and rescue teams noted that some main roads were blocked due to landslides, causing vehicles to be stranded.
The government announced a 3-day suspension of education in the region. Fatal floods and landslides related to rainfall are common in South Asia, but experts state that climate change is increasing their frequency and severity. Since Friday, a large part of eastern and central Nepal has been submerged, with many rivers suddenly rising and major damage occurring on the country’s highways. The country’s meteorology agency reported 240 millimeters of rain in the Kathmandu valley within 24 hours, indicating the highest recorded rainfall in the capital since at least 1970.
