Flood Disaster in India: At Least 15 People Killed

In India, along with its neighbor Bangladesh, at least 15 people have died due to floods and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall. Approximately 17,000 people from about 165 villages affected by the floods have been shifted to relief camps. During the excessive rainfall, seven members of the same family lost their lives as they got buried underground. The death toll in Bangladesh has risen to six.

In the northeastern state of Meghalaya in India, at least 15 people have lost their lives in floods and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall over the past four days. The Indian Meteorological Department predicts more rain in some parts of the state throughout this week under the forecast of “heavy rainfall.” The Meteorological Department classifies rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm as “heavy.”

SEVEN MEMBERS FROM THE SAME FAMILY PERISHED Among the deceased are seven members of the same family who were buried alive in the South Garo Hills region, along with two people swept away by the floodwaters in a vehicle and one person killed by a fallen tree. Approximately 17,000 people affected by the floods in about 165 villages have been shifted to relief camps. The number of fatalities in floods in the northern parts of Bangladesh, which borders Meghalaya, has risen to six. The floods have submerged vast agricultural lands in the region, causing significant damage to crops, but the full extent is still being assessed.

SOUTH ASIA UNDERWATER Many regions in South Asia have faced flood disasters during the monsoon season from June to September, which received excess rainfall this year. Last week in Nepal, continuous rainfall for two days resulted in landslides and floods that destroyed homes, roads, power plants, and bridges, leading to the deaths of at least 244 people, including many children. According to a study by the Centre for Policy Dialogue, the flood disaster in the eastern region of Bangladesh in August led to the deaths of over 70 people and caused $1.2 billion in damages.
