Recently, fishermen casting nets into Lake Iznik, which is affected by drought and gradually shrinking, caught a whopping 5 tons of silver fish in one go.
Lake Iznik, which holds the title of Turkey’s 5th largest and Marmara’s largest lake, is battling drought on one side while providing a abundance of fish on the other.
The Iznik Central Fisheries Cooperative continues its silver fish fishing operations.
Most recently, fishermen caught 5 tons of fish in the nets cast into Lake Iznik.
RECORD IN IZNIK HISTORY
Rıza Korkmaz, a 30-year veteran fisherman who caught 5 tons of fish in one net, said, “The amount of fish we catch varies every year. This year is more productive. Today we caught 5 tons of fish, but tomorrow we might catch 1 ton or 500 kilos. It changes every day.”
The 5 tons of silver fish caught from Lake Iznik were sent to the town of Bandırma in Balıkesir. The fish will be processed in a factory in Bandırma and exported as chips to European Union countries.
Some officials have expressed that the drought has also affected the natural life in Lake Iznik.
