For the first time since 2006, France has imposed an under-18 ban on a horror film. The third film in the Terrifier series, directed by Damien Leone and produced in the USA, has been banned for those under the age of 18 in the country.
The third film of the Terrifier horror series, which premiered on October 10th in France and sparked controversy, became the first film to be banned for those under 18 in the country since 2006.
The decision of the film classification committee to impose an under-18 ban on Terrifier 3 was the first ban in France since the 2006 film “Saw III”.
However, France generally uses only two classifications (12 and 16) and even the 16 rating indicates that films must have quite intense content.
The Terrifier series has become one of the biggest hits among independent horror films in recent years. The Christmas-themed film written and directed by Damien Leone, with a budget of $250,000, has grossed over $15 million worldwide.
JOINT STATEMENT
After the ban on Terrifier 3 for those under 18, Factoris Films, Shadowz Films, and ESC Editions released a joint statement expressing their sadness at this unexpected decision.
Officials defended the film’s violence as “ridiculous and unreal” and stated that viewers had the necessary maturity to understand this artistic approach.
It was also pointed out that recent films shown have not had a negative impact on teenage audiences.
