First Anniversary of October 7th: Israel’s 11 Massacres Etched in Memory in Gaza

7 Mins Read

Following Hamas’ Aqsa Storm attacks, Israel began bombing Gaza. Since October 7, 2023, tens of thousands of Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip, with many more injured. These attacks, carried out by the Israeli army with the support of the U.S., have turned into a nightmare for the Palestinian people. Since October 7, 2023, Israel has committed numerous massacres etched into memory against Palestinian families and displaced individuals in the Gaza Strip.
These massacres by Israel have resulted in the deaths and injuries of thousands, including women and children. Through the use of its destructive military apparatus and with the support of the U.S., Israel caused widespread destruction of infrastructure in the Gaza Strip, turning all residential areas into uninhabitable lands.
As the one-year anniversary of October 7 approaches, Anadolu Agency compiled Israel’s 11 massacres etched in memory in Gaza. On September 10, the Israeli military launched a major attack on the Mevasi area in Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip.
In the attack, 40 Palestinians lost their lives, while 60 were injured. The massacre took place in an area that the Israeli army claimed was “secure.” Israel had previously directed displaced individuals there.
According to Ismail Sevabite, the Media Office Director of Gaza’s government, this massacre caused dozens of civilians to be buried beneath the sands.
Displaced Palestinians noted that as a result of the bombing during the attack, the areas where tents were located suddenly turned into mass graves with large deep craters.
Following the attack, the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor stated that the U.S. was complicit in the massacre committed by the Israeli army using their destructive weapons.
According to Euro-Med’s statement, “Preliminary investigations show that Israeli warplanes dropped 3 MK-84 bombs on displaced individuals in their tents in the Mevasi area of Khan Yunis after midnight on Tuesday, September 10. As a result of the attack, approximately 20 tents with families inside were buried in 3 craters that were meters deep and in diameter.” Israeli warplanes launched a bloody attack on August 10.
The military carried out the attack on the Et-Tabiin School in Derec neighborhood in eastern Gaza where displaced civilians had sought refuge while praying in the morning, resulting in the deaths of at least 100 individuals, including children and women, while dozens were injured.
The Israeli army claimed that during the attack, it targeted 19 individuals from Hamas and the Islamic Jihad movement and issued a list containing the names of the members of these groups, but Palestinian groups denied these claims.
Euro-Med’s President Rami Abdo stated, “The list published by the Israeli army included those who had been killed in previous attacks and civilians who opposed Hamas.” The Israeli military carried out another horrific attack on El-Mevasi district in Khan Yunis, a place previously declared a “safe zone” in the Gaza Strip, on July 13.
In the attack, nearly 90 people, mostly children and women, were killed, and 300 others were injured. Israeli media alleged that the attack was targeting Muhammed ed-Dayf, the commander of the Izzeddin al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’ military wing, but Hamas denied that Dayf was targeted the same day as an assassination attempt on him.
In a statement during that time, Hamas said, “This is not the first time that Israel has claimed to target Palestinian leaders, only to later prove these claims false. It became clear that these baseless allegations were meant only to mask the extent of the horrific massacre.” On June 8, the Israeli army committed a massacre at the Nusayrat Refugee Camp in Deir al-Balah where Israeli soldiers dressed like Palestinians and used two civilian vehicles.
The bloody massacre, which resulted in the deaths of 274 Palestinians, including 64 children and 57 women, ended with hundreds of Palestinians wounded. According to Ismail es-Sevabite, the Media Office Director of Gaza’s government, the Israeli attack included the bombing of 89 homes and a building during the Nusayrat massacre.
The Israeli army announced that during the operations, four Israeli prisoners were rescued, but this led to the death of hundreds of Palestinians, including those Palestinians who were lined up with the Israelis. A total of 274 Palestinians, including 153 children and 161 women, were injured during the attack. Gaza’s government’s Media Office Director Ismail es-Sevabite indicated the magnitude of the Israeli attack by stating, “During the Nuseirat massacre, the occupying army bombed 89 homes and a building with people inside.” The Israeli army announced that it had conducted attacks on various points in the central Gaza Strip and rescued four Israeli prisoners alive in two different locations.
Meanwhile, the Qassam Brigades announced that the bombing resulted in the deaths of three Israeli prisoners, as well as hundreds of Palestinians killed and injured during the attack. The Israeli army attacked the tents of Palestinians who had been displaced from their homes in Rafah, Gaza Strip, on May 26, in violation of an International Court of Justice (ICJ) order to stop attacks.
Israel later sought to evade responsibility for the attack, claiming, contrary to reports, that the army did not attack a humanitarian aid zone in Rafah. In a statement, Hamas said, “The Zionist enemy continued to target the tents of displaced people in the west of Rafah, carrying out a new massacre that resulted in the martyrdom and injury of dozens.” Witnesses reported that Israeli warplanes bombed the camp with at least eight rockets.
Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, emphasized based on reports that they had uncovered multiple explosions and fires, noting that the area hosted displaced individuals in northern Gaza. Between March 8 and April 1, 2024, Israeli forces killed 400 Palestinians in and around Shifa Hospital in Gaza during a two-week-long siege.
After the Israeli army’s attacks, three mass graves were found inside the hospital complex. Following the end of the operation, the Israeli army claimed to have killed 200 “terrorists” and arrested 500 individuals affiliated with Hamas and Islamic Jihad. However, Hamas stated that Israel’s ongoing attacks on Shifa Hospital and its surroundings were an attempt to conceal its “failure” in achieving military objectives. On February 29, 2024, Israeli warplanes targeted a crowded residential area in the Nablus Junction on Rashid Street, which connects Gaza from north to south.
The Israeli military admitted to the massacre, known as the Onion Massacre, in which 118 people were killed and 760 injured. Gaza’s government characterized Israel’s attack on those awaiting humanitarian aid as “intentional and planned,” stating that, “The occupying army knew that these individuals were there to receive humanitarian aid, but they killed them cold-bloodedly.” Filistinliler experiencing extreme hunger due to the siege imposed on them in the region were waiting for help to pass through a checkpoint established by Israeli forces in western Gaza City. On November 18, 2023, the Israeli army bombed the El-Fahura School in the Jabaliya Refugee Camp, located in northern Gaza Strip, which operated under the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
While more than 200 people were reported dead and injured in the Israeli attack, it was reported that significant difficulties were encountered in retrieving the bodies left in the school’s corridors. Palestinians in Gaza sought refuge in schools they believed were protected under international humanitarian law. However, Israeli bombs found them even there. In the upheaval following the attack, Hamas declared that they would hold the occupier accountable for this massacre. Israeli warplanes targeted a densely populated residential area in the Jabaliya Refugee Camp in northern Gaza on October 31, 2023, killing approximately 1,000 Palestinians, most of them children and women.
The Israeli army acknowledged that a “large-scale” attack was carried out in the Jabaliya Camp. The military claimed to have assassinated Ibrahim al-Biyari, the commander of the Jabaliya Battalion linked to the al-Qassam Brigades, but Biyari denied this. Dating back to 425, the Holy Porphyrius Orthodox Church in Gaza serves both Christian and Muslim Palestinians displaced by Israel’s attacks.
On October 20, 2023, the Israeli army targeted the Holy Porphyrius Orthodox Church in a bloody attack. The church, located near the El-Ehli Baptist Hospital bombed by Israel on October
