According to the police statement, camera footage indicates that the fire started due to the explosion. The explosion occurred while there were many people in the crowded square, and images shared on social media showed a person whose clothes were on fire standing near the red vehicle that caught fire during the explosion. The injured person in the fire was extinguished and then taken into custody by the police. While the police closed off a large part of the square to pedestrians and traffic, explosives experts began examining the vehicle. The driver was also injured according to Dutch News, a small red vehicle, after moving towards the area where pedestrians were located in Dam Square, experienced a small explosion inside the vehicle. At that moment, a person whose clothes were on fire emerged from the vehicle. A police vehicle witnessing the incident stopped, and then two police officers ran towards the burning vehicle. The police statement indicated that the driver seemed to have intentionally started the fire and that he was also injured in the incident. The explosion occurred a week after a stabbing attack near Dam Square that left five people injured.
