He suggests simple dietary changes to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer, such as replacing sugary drinks with mineral water.

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 2 million new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in the US by 2025. According to the WHO, it is the second leading cause of death globally. Cancer cases are increasing more than ever, and the impact of our lifestyle cannot be ignored.

Gastroenterologist Dr. Saurabh Sethi, who has received education at Harvard and Stanford and has a million Instagram followers, is sounding the alarm about the increasing cancer rates among young adults. In a video shared on Instagram, he says, “I see people in their thirties and forties getting cancer compared to ten years ago. We can control certain risk factors.” Based on his expertise and clinical observations, Dr. Sethi shared four food changes that could help reduce cancer risk. These small dietary changes can make a big difference.

Dr. Sethi recommends replacing sugary sodas and energy drinks with mineral water. He mentions that consuming sugary drinks daily could increase early colorectal cancer onset by 32%. Colorectal cancer, also known as bowel cancer, colon cancer, or rectal cancer, is a type of cancer that develops in the colon or rectum and is one of the most common cancers worldwide. Individuals over 50 years old are usually at higher risk. Family history and lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise also influence the risk. Therefore, reducing sugary drinks can be a proactive approach.

The WHO has confirmed that no level of alcohol consumption is safe for our health. Therefore, that cocktail you’re sipping is not good for your health. Sethi particularly advises reducing alcohol intake, especially for women. He says, “Drinking two to three drinks a day increases a woman’s breast cancer risk by ten percent.”

Red meat is associated with numerous cancer risks. Dr. Sethi suggests replacing red and processed meats like hamburgers, hot dogs, and sausages with lean proteins. Instead, he recommends lean proteins like fish, chicken, or turkey. Sometimes it’s not about giving up taste but making smarter choices.

Finding refined grains may be easy and cheap, but this convenience does nothing for your health. The gut doctor recommends swapping refined grains like white bread and pasta for whole grains like quinoa, barley, or whole wheat. Whole grains are also full of fiber that supports gut health and can reduce cancer risk. This simple change added to your overall healthy diet is more important than you think!” he emphasizes.
