During the Ramadan Bayram, the retail sector is expecting 130 billion lira in card payments. Sinan Öncel, the President of the United Brands Association (BMD), stated that they anticipate 130 billion lira in card payments during the Ramadan Bayram, starting from the day before the holiday. In a written statement, Öncel mentioned that shopping in the branded retail sector would peak on March 29, which coincides with the day before the holiday, and noted that expenses in categories such as groceries, clothing, footwear, and dining would provide some relief. Öncel pointed out that around 20% of card expenses are for grocery expenditures, with clothing, footwear, and dining being the top three categories. Based on previous observations during religious holidays, shopping tends to intensify on the day before the holiday. Data from the Interbank Card Center (BKM) confirms this observation. For example, last year during the 4-day Ramadan Bayram, a total of 94.1 billion lira in card expenses were recorded, with 37 billion lira, or 39%, being spent on the day before the holiday. This year, they predict that during the 4-day holiday, card expenditures will reach approximately 130 billion lira, reflecting an increase of around 40% parallel to the annual inflation rate. They expect approximately 40% of this shopping, around 50 billion lira, to occur on March 29. Sinan Öncel also noted a decline in branded sales during the first two months of the year in the branded retail sector. He emphasized that in order to reverse this trend, there is no other solution but to develop innovative products and reduce costs.
