President of the EU Commission, von der Leyen, stated that they have prepared additional measures in response to US tariffs. Issuing a warning about an increase in inflation, von der Leyen called on the US to negotiate. European Union (EU) Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made a statement in Samarkand, where she was attending the EU-Central Asia Summit following the announcement of reciprocal US tariffs. Remarking that the tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump towards all countries, including the EU, are a major blow to the world economy, von der Leyen emphasized her deep regret. Von der Leyen pointed out that reciprocal tariffs will have enormous consequences, stating, “The global economy will suffer greatly, uncertainty will rise, and protectionism will increase. The consequences will be terrible for millions of people worldwide.” WARNING ABOUT INCREASED INFLATION Stressing that the effects of tariffs will be felt immediately and harm consumers worldwide, von der Leyen emphasized, “Millions of citizens will face higher grocery bills. Pharmaceuticals and transportation will become more expensive. Inflation will rise.” Von der Leyen expressed that uncertainty will increase, supply chains will be disrupted, and burdensome bureaucracy will emerge, explaining that the cost of doing business with the US will increase significantly. Pointing out the absence of order in the global trading system, von der Leyen noted that the US is creating confusion and chaos among trading partners. Von der Leyen expressed agreement with US President Trump on the serious shortcomings in the global trading system and some benefiting unfairly from it. CALL FOR NEGOTIATIONS WITH THE US Emphasizing readiness to support any efforts to align the global trading system with economic realities, von der Leyen stated, “But I also want to make it clear. Resorting to tariffs as your first and only resort will not solve the problem.” Reminding of their readiness to negotiate with the US to remove barriers in transatlantic trade, von der Leyen stated, “At the same time, we are prepared to respond. We are already completing our first package of countermeasures in response to tariffs on steel. Now, we are preparing to take further countermeasures to protect our interests and businesses if negotiations fail.” Indicating they will closely monitor the indirect effects of new tariffs, von der Leyen said, “We will not accept global overcapacity and dumping in our market.” von der Leyen asserted that they will defend Europe’s interests and values, explaining that issues can be addressed through negotiations. “EUROPE HAS EVERYTHING IT NEEDS” von der Leyen stated that they must be prepared for the inevitable effects of US tariffs, saying, “Europe has everything it needs to weather this storm.” President Trump announced that the US will implement reciprocal tariffs against other countries starting tomorrow, with a base tariff rate of 10 percent. This includes reciprocal tariffs of 34 percent to China, 20 percent to the EU, 46 percent to Vietnam, 32 percent to Taiwan, 24 percent to Japan, and 26 percent to India.
