Eruption Ready Volcano: 300 Thousand People Bracing for Disaster

2 Mins Read

Roughly 300 thousand residents in Alaska are on high alert due to an imminent volcanic eruption. The seismic activity around Spurr Volcano has been escalating in recent months. The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) stated, “Unrest continues at Spurr Volcano.” Seismic activity has been consistently high for a long period, with occasional small, shallow volcanic earthquakes detected beneath the volcano in the past day.

CITY TO BE COVERED IN ASH Officials explain that the increasing seismic activity indicates that magma rising from beneath Spurr Volcano is causing stress and rock fracturing in the surrounding areas, leading to earthquakes. Residents in the region have started stockpiling protective gear following ongoing warnings. The primary concern highlighted is the possibility of ash showers hitting the city following an eruption.

STOCKPILING PROTECTIVE GEAR Residents in the area are stockpiling numerous respiratory masks, goggles, and air filters, and purchasing protective eyewear for their pets. Some individuals are also stockpiling duct tape to seal windows and doorways to protect against ashes. While the possibility of Spurr calming down exists, the ongoing seismic activity emphasizes that all dangers are still possible.

VOLCANIC ERUPTION AND RISKS Volcanic ash can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat, leading to more serious health issues, especially for individuals with asthma, other lung diseases, and severe heart conditions. The seismic activity near Spurr Volcano began in April 2024, increasing from an average of 30 per week to an average of 125 per week by early October. The city administration has also issued safety recommendations for pet owners ahead of a potential eruption. Officials advise residents to keep their pets indoors as much as possible and have a two-week supply of food and medication.
