2 Mins Read

Cuba has been plunged into darkness due to a breakdown at the power plant. Millions of people were left without electricity. In some cities, the outage has exceeded 30 hours. 80% of the country still cannot be provided with electricity. Due to the failure of fully resolving the breakdown at the main power plants in Cuba, millions of people were left without electricity. According to a news report in the local media, the breakdown at the Antonio Guiteras Power Plant in the city of Matanzas on October 18 left millions of Cubans without electricity. Authorities announced that, following intense efforts, electricity has begun to be restored to some areas, particularly the capital Havana. However, 80% of the country still cannot be provided with electricity, and some cities have experienced outages for over 30 hours. Images shared on social media showed Havana’s Jose Marti International Airport in darkness. Energy sector officials, led by Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, met to assess the power outages nationwide. Power outages are frequently experienced in Cuba due to breakdowns in power plants. According to reports, these problems recur due to inadequate maintenance of the plants built by the Soviet Union 40 years ago. The Ministry of Energy and Mining reports that the country consumes 8 million tons of fuel annually, with only 3 million tons being sourced from domestic production. Cuba sources much of its energy needs from Venezuela, Russia, and Mexico due to economic embargoes. In recent years, the Cuban government has started leasing floating power plants to prevent power outages and increase production capacity. Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel stated on the social media platform X yesterday that work will continue incessantly until the power cut is resolved.
