In China, the Ministry of State Security responsible for intelligence announced that an engineer who was found to have sold state secret information to foreign intelligence services has been sentenced to death. It was revealed that before resigning from his job, the engineer illegally copied a large amount of classified information.
A post on the Ministry of State Security’s WeChat account in China detailed the espionage case of an assistant engineer working in a public research institute whose last name is mentioned as “Liu.”
STOLE STATE SECRETS BEFORE QUITTING The statement mentioned that Liu was unhappy with the conditions at the institute where he worked, feeling ignored for promotions which led to his dissatisfaction, resulting in his resignation. Before leaving, he was reported to have illegally copied a significant amount of classified information.
SOLD STATE SECRETS It was mentioned that after resigning, the former engineer started working at a securities investment company, but following the failure of some risky investments, he reportedly fell into debt.
Facing financial difficulties, Liu was said to have contacted a foreign intelligence organization to sell the information he possessed, selling the “state secrets” for money, and later transferring them to intelligence agencies of several other countries as well.
TRIED FOR ESPIONAGE AND SENTENCED TO DEATH The statement explained that Liu was later caught, tried for espionage, and sentenced to death, without providing information on the date of the sentence or whether it has been carried out.
