Elections Concluded in Greenland Amid Trump’s Threats of “Seizing Control”

2 Mins Read

While US President Donald Trump’s statements about taking control of Greenland continue, the independence-leaning Democratit Party won the parliamentary elections on the island. A referendum on independence may come up after the elections.

In Greenland, where President Donald Trump’s threats of “seizing control” persist, the Democratit (Democrats) Party won the parliamentary elections. According to CNN, voters in Greenland went to the polls yesterday to determine the parliament members. In the parliamentary elections in Greenland, where independence debates continue, the opposition party Democratit secured the majority in parliament by receiving 29.9% of the votes. Naleraq, campaigning for faster independence from Denmark, gathered 24.5% of the votes. The Inuit Ataqatigiit (People’s Community) Party led by Greenland Prime Minister Mute Bourup Egede received approximately 21% of the votes. While all parties in Greenland, an autonomous region of Denmark, agree on the island’s independence, they have differing opinions on the speed of this process. Calls for independence have been on Greenland’s agenda for about a decade, and organizing a referendum to gain independence from Denmark is on the table after the general election.

TRUMP’S PLAN TO “SEIZE CONTROL” OF GREENLAND

On December 23, 2024, President Trump reiterated his claim on Truth Social that Greenland should be under US control, stating that owning and controlling the island is an “absolute necessity.” Greenland Prime Minister Mute Bourup Egede rejected the possibility of Greenland becoming a US state, stating that the country is “not for sale.” Trump, in a speech to Congress on March 5, said, “We need Greenland for national security and even international security. I guess one way or the other, we’ll get it. We’ll get it and keep you safe.” Egede then remarked, “We don’t want to be Americans or Danes, we are Greenlandic. American leaders need to understand that.”
