It is also suggested that the region’s dams may have been damaged. Deaths and injuries were reported in a mosque that collapsed. Numerous buildings suffered severe damage. The military junta in control of Myanmar has requested international aid. A call for blood donations was made due to the large number of injured individuals.
In Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, many buildings suffered damage and destruction. The collapse of a skyscraper under construction trapped dozens of workers under the rubble. It was reported that the majority of workers were rescued. The Thailand government declared a state of emergency in Bangkok. Taking into account the population density in the area, the U.S. Geological Survey announced an estimated death toll of 10,000. The shadow foreign minister of Myanmar stated that there might be more casualties near the epicenter in Mandalay.
Describing the communication as a serious issue with limited access and restricted internet, the minister added that the situation was severe and urgent international humanitarian and technical assistance was needed. The shadow minister confirmed at least 12 deaths in the earthquake in Myanmar and expressed that counter-insurgents would be deployed to provide humanitarian aid.
Following the earthquake in central Myanmar, a significant part of the emergency department of a hospital in the capital was severely damaged. The European Union announced readiness to support Myanmar and Thailand following the earthquake. France also expressed its readiness to provide support, stating that diplomatic buildings in Bangkok were evacuated. An official from the Myanmar Fire Services Department told Reuters: “We have begun search operations and are moving around Yangon to check for casualties and damage. We do not have any information yet.”
The ruling military in Myanmar declared a state of emergency in many regions. An announcement made via the Telegram messaging application promised swift investigation by the state and rescue operations in addition to providing humanitarian aid. The Prime Minister of Thailand held an emergency meeting following the strong earthquake.
Police and health officials reported that a 30-story skyscraper under construction collapsed in Bangkok, trapping 43 workers. It was stated that 42 individuals were rescued, while 1 person lost their life. In the metropolitan area of Bangkok where more than 17 million people reside, alarm systems were activated, prompting residents to evacuate to the streets via stairways from apartments and hotels.
The Thailand Stock Exchange revealed that operations came to a complete halt following the earthquake that hit Myanmar’s center. Governor Chadchart Sittipunt mentioned that the number of damaged buildings was still unknown, and evaluations were ongoing. He called on people to be cautious. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed condolences for the loss of life in the earthquakes in Myanmar.
