With the countdown to the November elections in the USA ongoing, all eyes are now on the vice presidential nominees debate scheduled for Tuesday. Ohio Senator James David (JD) Vance will go head-to-head live with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Millions of voters are expected to tune in to watch this broadcast. The Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and her Republican rival Donald Trump last faced off in a live broadcast on September 10.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Ohio Senator JD Vance are set to face off live in a vice presidential debate planned for Tuesday.
FOUR PRIMARY OBJECTIVES According to the Wall Street Journal, the nominees will focus on four primary objectives during the live debate.
These include protecting the presidential candidates from attacks, conducting debates without getting too ugly, appearing reliable as potential White House replacements, and avoiding embarrassing situations. Vice presidential candidates, described by WSJ as “quick to anger,” will face one of the riskiest moments of their political careers in an event watched by millions of voters. VANCE’S HEAVY BURDEN Trump’s vice presidential nominee, Vance, is expected to carry a heavier burden during the encounter. One reason for this is former President Donald Trump being seen as having lost against Vice President Kamala Harris during the debate held on September 10. The Senator also faces a bigger challenge as polls indicate he has the lowest popularity rate among the candidates. “CHILDLESS WOMEN WITH CATS” It is expected that the Democrat Walz will focus on white working-class voters and touch on topics such as American football and gun ownership. Republican Vance, on the other hand, may clarify controversial statements like “childless women with cats” and “immigrants who eat cats and dogs.” CONTRASTS BETWEEN THE TWO CANDIDATES The contrasts between the two candidates are also highlighted in WSJ’s report. It was emphasized that Walz’s conservatism and Vance’s proximity to progressivism could provide advantages in attracting votes from the opposite side. If Vance manages to substantially outperform Walz, this could be helpful in changing the narrative showing Harris ahead of Trump in recent weeks’ polls. The two candidates will have a greater chance of more conflicts or at least cutting each other off than in the presidential debate. Broadcast channel CBS News is not planning to mute the microphones unless absolutely necessary.
