In the April-June period of this year, domestic tourists’ travel spending within the country increased by 115.8% compared to the same period last year, reaching 103 billion 114 million 141 thousand liras.
The Turkish Statistical Institute announced household domestic tourism data for the second quarter of the year. According to the data, 16 million 148 thousand people residing in the country traveled domestically in the second quarter of this year.
The total number of trips made with one or more overnight stays within the country by travelers increased by 23.3% to 19 million 830 thousand, compared to the same quarter last year. In this quarter, travelers made 118 million 258 thousand overnight stays, with an average of 6 overnight stays per trip. EXPENDITURES INCREASED The amount of domestic tourists’ travel spending within the country increased by 115.8% in the mentioned period, totaling 103 billion 114 million 141 thousand liras. 90% of these expenditures, amounting to 92 billion 772 million 553 thousand liras, were personal expenditures, while 10% totaling 10 billion 341 million 588 thousand liras were package tour expenditures. The average spending per trip was recorded as 5,200 liras. The highest shares in total travel expenditures in the second quarter were seen in food and beverage with 33.1%, transportation with 27.3%, and accommodation with 14.1%. When the change rates of expenditure types compared to the same period last year were examined, an increase of 117.1% in food and beverage, 123% in transportation, and 112.2% in accommodation was observed. VISITING RELATIVES TOPS THE LIST Travel for the purpose of visiting relatives during the April-June period ranked first with 62.4%. This was followed by 31.6% for “sightseeing, entertainment, vacation” and 2.7% for “health”. During this period, travelers stayed mostly at “friends’ or relatives’ homes” with a total of 86 million 604 thousand overnight stays. “Own home” ranked second in terms of overnight stays by accommodation types with 13 million 925 thousand stays, while “hotels” ranked third with a total of 10 million 308 thousand overnight stays.
