Claims have emerged that Köfteci Yusuf, known for its meatballs and kebabs, has a halal certificate. However, the Halal Accreditation Institution (HAI) stated that there are no documents issued by them accrediting the establishment. The institution clarified that the alleged halal certificate was actually provided by another organization and covered the products during the production stage. The HAI confirmed that there was no document accrediting Köfteci Yusuf with a HAI accreditation at the time of sampling and analysis conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The institution emphasized that they do not directly issue halal certificates for products or services, but rather accredit local and foreign halal certification bodies based on objective criteria laid out by relevant legislation and international standards. A recent incident in March this year revealed the presence of ‘pig genes’ in samples taken from two separate service points of a food establishment listed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry as posing a health hazard in Ankara. At the sampling time, the institution did not have any document accredited by HAI. The said establishment was only granted a halal certificate by a local certification body for various products manufactured at its main production center on August 15, 2024, in accordance with legislation and international standards. Furthermore, the halal certificate issued in August only covers ‘minced meat, prepared meat and meat mixtures, marrow bone broth, and soup’ manufactured in limited quantities at the main production base. Following the discoveries made, the HAI requested an official defense from the certifying body to confirm there had been no negligence or similar issues throughout the process. Moreover, the institution initiated an on-site audit process concerning the same body. The institution highlighted its commitment to meticulously evaluating accreditation applications from local and foreign conformity assessment bodies based on internationally recognized standards and principles in the field. Additionally, the HAI stated that they will continue monitoring and controlling the accredited certification bodies based on routine surveillance plans, feedback from the market, and the organizations’ performance to address any potential risk situations.
