Potato harvest has begun in Aksaray, which is among the top 10 provinces in potato production in Turkey. Potatoes collected from the field and sold to traders for 2 liras can reach up to 8 liras by the time they reach the market. In Aksaray, where 80% of the population earns a living from agriculture and animal husbandry, the potato harvest has started. Aksaray producers are working tirelessly in the fields to harvest the potatoes they planted, which are then sold to traders for 2 liras per potato. The price of potatoes can reach up to 8 liras before reaching the market, where they meet consumers for prices ranging from 10 to 15 liras. Aşire Bacık (60), a potato producer, pointed out the low yield in potato production this year and mentioned that potatoes which are sold for 2 liras in the field are sold for 10 liras in the market. Drawing attention to the fact that producers are not making a profit, Aşire Bacık said, “We are harvesting the first potatoes of 2024. There is not much yield in potatoes. The yield is quite low. We sell them for 2 liras, and they are sold for 10 liras in the market. We are not making a profit. Even when we sell them for 2 liras, we are not making a profit. But they sell them for 10 liras in the market. It varies between 12 and 15 liras depending on the location. They are making a profit, but the farmers are in loss.”
