In connection with the investigation into the death of Argentine football legend Diego Maradona, seven health workers who treated Maradona before his death will be tried on charges of murder.
The seven health workers who were responsible for treating Diego Maradona before his death will appear in court in Buenos Aires on Tuesday. The team, consisting of doctors and nurses, faces accusations of negligence and could receive up to 25 years in prison.
Following the death of Maradona in November 2020 due to a heart attack, an investigation was launched in Argentina into the doctors and nurses responsible for his care.
Maradona, who had recently undergone surgery for a blood clot in his brain, was receiving treatment at home just before his death.
After a medical team found “shortcomings and irregularities” in Maradona’s treatment, the court decided to press charges of wrongful death.
The accused include the neurosurgeon and Maradona’s personal physician Leopoldo Luque, a psychiatrist and psychologist, two doctors, two nurses, and their supervisors. All health workers have denied the allegations against them.
Maradona, who led Argentina to victory in the 1986 World Cup and is considered one of the greatest players in sports history, struggled with drug addiction, alcoholism, and health issues throughout his life. His death in 2020, known for his near-death experiences in 2000 and 2004, caused profound sadness in Argentina and worldwide. While the defendants deny the charges, the trial will be conducted by a court consisting of three judges in the San Isidro district of Buenos Aires.
